Best CCTV camera for home and shop: what to choose

Dome or bullet, analog HD or IP, DVR or NVR? A clear guide to choosing the best CCTV camera system for a home, shop or office.

By Upixel, Ahmedabad · Updated

A CCTV system is only useful if the footage is clear when you need it. That depends less on the brand name and more on choosing the right camera type for each spot.

See the systems we supply and service on the CCTV camera page.

Dome or bullet

Dome cameras mount on the ceiling and suit indoor areas such as shops, receptions and corridors. Bullet cameras are weather-resistant, see further, and suit gates, parking and boundary walls. PTZ cameras pan, tilt and zoom, and suit large open areas such as warehouses.

Analog HD or IP

Analog HD cameras connect to a DVR over coaxial cable. They cost less and suit homes and small shops. IP cameras connect to an NVR over network cable, give higher resolution, and can take power over the same cable (PoE). Choose IP for offices and larger sites.

Resolution, night vision and storage

2 MP is the practical minimum; 4 MP or 5 MP shows faces and number plates more clearly. Check the night-vision range for outdoor cameras. Use a surveillance-grade hard disk, and size it for how many days of recording you need.

Brands to compare

In India, compare CP Plus, Dahua, Prama, Securus, Secureye and TP-Link VIGI and Tapo for Wi-Fi cameras.

Common faults you can avoid

Most recording gaps come from a failing hard disk or a weak power supply, not the camera. Poor night vision is often a dirty lens cover. If a channel goes blank, check the connector first, then book an on-site visit.

Quick checklist

  • Indoor or outdoor for each camera
  • Analog HD or IP
  • Resolution in megapixels
