A cheque scanner, often called a CR scanner, captures the image of a cheque and reads the MICR code line printed along its bottom edge. Banks use it for image-based clearing under the Cheque Truncation System.
We sell and service these machines; details are on the CR cheque scanner page.
What CTS means for the scanner
Under the Cheque Truncation System, the physical cheque stops at the presenting bank and its image travels for clearing. The Reserve Bank of India publishes the framework. For the branch, this means image quality and a correct MICR read on every cheque.
Single-feed or batch-feed
Single-feed scanners take one cheque at a time and suit teller counters with low volumes. Batch-feed scanners take a stack and suit back offices and busy branches. Buy for the busiest day, not the average one.
MICR and endorsement
The MICR head reads the magnetic ink characters. A weak or dirty head causes read errors and rejected items. Many scanners also print an endorsement on the back of the cheque as it passes, which needs its own ink cartridge.
Brands to compare
Common ranges are the Canon imageFORMULA CR series, Panini Vision X and I:Deal, Digital Check TellerScan and CheXpress, and the Epson TM-S series.
Keeping it running
Feed and separation rollers wear with every cheque. Double feeds and jams are the first sign. Clean the path regularly and replace roller kits on schedule. For general office scanning, see flatbed vs sheet-fed scanners.

Common questions
What does CR scanner stand for?
It is the common name for a cheque reader or cheque scanner, a machine that images cheques and reads the MICR line.
Why does my cheque scanner double feed?
Worn separation rollers are the usual cause. Replacing the roller kit and cleaning the path normally fixes it.
