Consumables are the parts of a printer or copier that get used up: toner, ink, drums, ribbons and paper. Buying the wrong one is the most common and most avoidable printing problem.
What we keep in stock is listed on the consumables page.
Toner and ink
Toner is the powder used by laser printers and copiers. Ink is the liquid used by inkjet and ink tank printers. They are never interchangeable, and each printer family needs its own type. Always buy by the printer model number.
Drum units
The drum transfers the image onto the paper. In some printers it is built into the toner cartridge; in others, such as many Brother and Kyocera models, it is a separate unit with a much longer life. A worn drum shows as faded print, grey background or repeating marks.
Ribbons and thermal rolls
Dot-matrix printers use an inked ribbon. Billing and receipt printers use thermal paper rolls and need no ink at all. Match the roll width to the printer.
Paper makes a difference
70 or 75 gsm copier paper is right for everyday printing. Damp or poor paper is behind many paper jams. Store paper flat and sealed, especially in the monsoon.
Buying the right part
Check the model number on the front or back of the machine, or bring a photo of the old cartridge. Manufacturer sites such as HP, Canon, Epson and Konica Minolta list the correct part for each model. To cut running cost further, read our toner refilling guide and our copier buying guide.
Quick checklist
- Exact printer or copier model
- Toner or ink, never guess
- Separate drum unit or combined
- Paper weight and storage
- Keep one spare of what you use most
Common questions
How do I know which toner my printer needs?
Use the printer model number. The correct cartridge code is printed on the old cartridge and listed on the manufacturer's site.
How long does a drum unit last?
A separate drum unit typically outlasts several toner cartridges. Replace it when print quality drops and a new toner does not fix it.
